When it comes to unusual alliances across species, Mother Nature never ceases to astonish. Another example of animal devotion that has no bounds comes from an Irish animal refuge. A newborn rabbit and a baby pigeon, both orphans at the Kildare Animal Foundation Wildlife Unit, have melted everyone’s heart with their story, demonstrating they are far stronger when face the world together.

The two poor little things have met at the rescue. The tiny rabbit was only a couple of days old when arrived there, while his now inseparable friend was rescued a week later.

“We received a call from a lady who had found a pigeon’s nest on the ground,” the group announced in a Facebook post. “In it was a newly hatched chick and an unhatched egg. Sadly, the egg was cold and no longer viable, but the little chick appeared to be unharmed from the fall.”

The officials at the shelter were quite skeptical that the two little critters would survive since they were both too young. They both needed to be placed in an incubator, and because the facility only had one, they devised a technique to fit them both in while separating them by a little partition.

When a caregiver went to check on them a few hours later, the scene he saw slapped him square in the face. The adorable little animals were snuggling up to one another. They were able to take down the barrier that separated them and begin hugging one other. The group reported, “Both infants fed and settled down well.”

“Imagine our foster carer’s delight when she returned to check on them and saw that the chasm had been bridged, and these two had decided that life together was preferable than life apart.”

Bunny the rabbit and Pidg the pigeon have been together since that time. They’ve both survived it through, despite all obstacles, thanks to their remarkable, unbreakable friendship. The rescue said, “The comfort of two heartbeats together, of camaraderie, has overcome the species gap.” “They’re just two small newborns who find solace and warmth in each other’s arms.”
