Smoky the hedgehog is fighting for his life in Krakow after consuming poison designed to kill garden snails. Fortunately, he is receiving exceptional care from the Igliwiak Hedgehog Rescue Center, Poland’s first and only hedgehog refuge.

Hedgehogs in the wild confront a variety of threats on a daily basis, despite the fact that it would be difficult to find someone who would wish to harm one of these prickly little creatures.

According to Andrzej Kuziomski, the center’s director, “Many of them get hit by automobiles, get entangled in lawnmowers, or being mauled by dogs. Poisoning can cause them to die slowly and painfully. Gardeners who prefer to lay on mounds of leaves set fire to them, or worse, they are burned alive.”

Kuziomski says that the center is already at capacity, housing over 50 hedgehogs. Many of the female hedgehogs require more specialized attention, as the females are the only ones to suffer from epilepsy and other gender-specific ailments.

Despite the fact that many of the hedgehogs, including Smoky, are in poor health, the center is doing everything it can to keep them safe. Przemyslaw Baran, one of the veterinarians, said, “[Smoky] is dehydrated and feeble.

(He) is unable to eat and will be kept under surveillance for a few days. We’ll rehabilitate him, administer intravenous nutritional solutions, and do the necessary tests to rule out renal or liver disease.”
Smoky, here’s praying for a full recovery!
