This was shot perfectly in the Californian seas of Monteray Bay, a popular whale-watching destination.
The photographer who captured the amazing close encounter, Douglas Craft said: “The whale is huge! If I’d been the fisherman, I’d probably need some new underwear.”
The breaching whale appears considerably larger due to the small fishing boat and the angle of the images.
“I went below deck to shoot from a porthole close to the waterline. That’s what gives this amazing perspective of looking up at the whale,” said Douglas.
“It was great capturing this video,” he remarked of the experience. The whale had breached many times far away from the fishermen. When whales breach many times, however, they may also be moving in a certain direction while beneath, gaining momentum for the next breach. Because the whale was going in that direction, I assumed the next breach would occur near the fisherman. I didn’t anticipate the whale and the boat to be so perfectly aligned.”
