In Kolkata, India, during the past several days, flooding brought on by torrential rains has forced both people and animals to seek shelter from the storm. Tarun Kumar Mandal, a constable, felt it was only right to assist people in need.

On Saturday, Mandal was keeping an eye on traffic at a congested seven-way intersection when he had some unexpected company. He was standing in the middle of the street when two wet stray dogs discovered him and flocked to him.

The kind officer extended his enormous umbrella as a place for the two dogs to take refuge as he continued to control traffic.

The tiny gesture of compassion was captured on camera by a bystander and published on social media, affecting people all over the world. And the dogs’ expressions say it all:

With an estimated 35 to 40 million stray dogs in India — one of the highest populations in the world — there’s a long way to go to help these animals. But the Kolkata police try to step in wherever they can when there’s a dog in need of rescue or just a place to rest.

And for the two grateful street dogs, the moment of respite meant the world.
