Without help, these creatures would have been in very bad shape.
Numerous people and animals were displaced by the terrible weather in 2016, when over 23 inches of rain triggered catastrophic flash floods in numerous southern states, including Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
In the midst of chaos, two men in Hernando, Mississippi, saw that there were animals in need and decided to take action.
Frankie Williams, a 26-year-old plumber who also works for a landscaping business, told The Dodo at the time, “My brother and I kept observing various animals make their way out of the flooded woods onto a meadow in front of our house.”
“We could explore the flooded woods in a little boat that was at our disposal. A number of field mice, ground shrews, and rabbits were saved as we drove through flooded fields on our route to the woods “explained he.
Opossums and armadillos were left alone on patches of ground with little choice but to cling to anything they could find to save themselves from being washed away by the increasing floods, Williams said, whereas raccoons were able to find protection by ascending higher into trees.
Williams and his brother then set off, loading the boat with every frightened animal they came across. The creatures were freed as soon as the water levels started to drop.
Williams said, “I had a strong love for the outdoors growing up. I detest witnessing any animal suffer.
