Recently, Holly Brown was in her Canadian garden watching her seven hens forage and graze when she saw something peculiar.
She had never spotted the circular item there, which was tucked away in the grass close to the chicken coop.
In an email to The Dodo, Brown stated, “At first, I assumed it was a ball the dog discovered. Surprised, I realized it was an egg when I lifted it up.
Holly Brown, a Canadian woman, was just out in her backyard watching her seven hens forage and graze when she saw something peculiar.
A circular item she had never seen before was there, hidden in the grass close to the chicken coop.
Brown wrote in an email to The Dodo, “At first, I believed it was a ball the dog discovered.” To my amazement, I discovered it to be an egg when I picked it up.
Evidently, that day, one of Brown’s hens had departed from producing a typical egg-shaped egg, laying a nearly perfectly round egg instead.
It was unlike anything Brown had ever seen.
Here’s the egg next to a ping pong ball:
Brown made the decision to share the strange egg on social media. She learned how unique that gift from her chicken actually was in this manner.
Another tale of a woman who discovered a spherical egg and later sold it for hundreds of dollars was related by a friend of Brown’s.
One in a billion was used in reports at the time to describe the likelihood of discovering a round egg; while obviously not an official number, it is probably a reliable indication of their rarity.
Brown, meanwhile, said she has no plans to part with her prized round egg. She’s going to keep it as a conversation piece — as a special gift from her cherished birds.
After all, to Brown, her hens are more than just egg-layers round or otherwise.
Brown stated, “I think of my hens as pets.” It’s fun to observe their antics every day.
