For the past three years, Doug Carleton has visited the same municipal park almost daily. He hangs there, takes in the scenery, and becomes friends with all the local geese while he is there.
The Dodo quoted Carleton as saying, “I am normally excellent with animals, I can befriend the most snaggletoothed cat.” “Geese were new to me, but I just learned how to not scare or give them cause to fear me, and soon all of them just got fine with having me among them and engaging with them,” the author said.
There are currently eight geese who live in the park regularly, and Carleton has names for every one of them.
“I can walk up to and just list them off as anyone would eight people they know well,” Carleton said.
The geese have come to accept Carleton as a friend, and they’ve also learned to trust him as well.
Back in June, Carleton first noticed a little gosling scurrying about and gave it the name Sam. When Sam was old enough to swim, his parents took him to shore so Carleton could begin to get to know him. Sam was born on a tiny island in the midst of the pond where the geese spend the night.
The young goose now gets very delighted and frequently goes up to meet Carleton whenever he sees him since Sam grown to be incredibly fond of him over time.
“He is the most passive of all the geese so far, geese tend to hiss at people when they get cornered/think someone is moving too close and ignoring the honking,” Carleton said. “I have never heard Sam hiss at anyone yet.”
Sam has complete faith in Carleton and looks forward to his visits to the park. The other geese frequently follow his lead and fly or waddle over to welcome their favorite person when he approaches sprinting.
All of Carleton’s buddies are geese, yet they all have a very special bond. They now have a special place in his heart, and he feels the same way about them.
