Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is a hallowed location where many noble individuals are buried, yet many people are unaware that it is also home to a diverse range of species.
“Wildlife abounds on ANC’s 639 acres,” the organization posted on Facebook. “Deer, squirrels, and chipmunks, coyotes, foxes, snakes, a variety of birds, and even wild turkeys” are among the ANC’s fauna.
One of those wild turkeys has just developed a nice new hobby: accompanying funeral processions.
While this particular turkey enjoys a number of activities around the cemetery, including visiting the Tomb of the Unknown and sunbathing across the grounds, her new favorite activity appears to be accompanying funeral processions as they pay their respects to the deceased. To be courteous, the turkey takes up the rear and follows the parade discreetly. She never interrupts the ceremony, preferring to silently participate, and her presence is usually a pleasant surprise for everyone there.
This isn’t the first time a turkey has sought to get involved in the cemetery’s activities. Another turkey was observed hanging around close to a guard a few months ago.
Hopefully, the funeral procession turkey will continue to join in and bring joy to everyone who’s watching. She just wants to be considerate, and hopefully, everyone else will honor her in return.
“If you spot her, or any wildlife within ANC, please remember this is their home and be respectful of them and their space,” ANC wrote.
