After Losing Her Pups The Mother Dog Was In A Terrible Mood

Daya the dog was discovered walking the streets by herself when nine pups were inside of her. She eventually wound up at a South Carolina municipal shelter.

However, because of the overcrowding, Daya was in danger of being put to death. As a result, Halfway There Rescue intervened to set up a foster home where she could easily give birth to her babies.

The 3-year-old puppy was taken to the clinic for a checkup by her rescuers, who were then shocked by the devastating results.

“X-rays showed no evidence of living babies,” Jennifer Werner, a volunteer for the rescue, told The Dodo. “Her nine puppies were in the process of being absorbed by her body. This had caused a severe infection in her uterus that required emergency surgery within an hour of her arrival at the vet hospital.”

The surgery saved Daya’s life, but it soon became clear that she wasn’t handling the loss of her unborn puppies well.

Daya was still in full mothering mode when she settled into her foster family. She started picking up socks or toys and cleaning them or sleeping with them as if they were infants. She carried them with her everywhere she went because she yearned for the security of having something to look after.

Werner said, “She had a great environment to heal in, but her instinct had taken over with nowhere to focus her energies without her babies. “While everybody at [the rescue] was overjoyed that Daya had survived surgery, we were devastated to learn that she was without her children. She was unable to comprehend what had transpired.

Three days after Daya’s surgery, the rescue got a call about a female puppy who had been abandoned on the side of the road. She had parasites and skin infections and had just gotten out of emergency surgery to remove one of her eyes, which had completely ruptured.

And now, she needed a mom.

Werner stated, “We had hopes that she may have the mom she was missing. Everyone understood the puppy could survive with just human help.

The puppy, called Raisin, was being cared for by the vet team, and they brought her in to meet Daya. Within a short period of time, their attachment became so deep that they wouldn’t leave one other’s sides.

They were cuddling, and it was clear that they were developing a romance, according to Werner. Despite the fact that they were unrelated, the two fulfilled a need for one another and developed a strong friendship as a result.

Since the day they met less than a week ago, Daya and little 6-week-old Raisin haven’t strayed very far from one another.

From snuggling up for a nap to hanging out in the sun, they’re continuing to heal from their surgeries together — and will soon be available for adoption.

“They’re still recovering from medical issues like mange at their foster home, so they’ll be there for several more weeks,” Werner said. “With the help of the veterinary staff who would not give up on Raisin and the rescue who made sure Daya was able to leave the shelter, these two will forever share a bond.”
