A Sad Elephant Herd Gathers To Pay Their Late Leader Their Final Respects

Elephants are renowned for their extraordinary social relationships, which set them apart from other wild animals. Elephants prioritize their family and matriarch above everything else, and they are fiercely protective of the calves in the herd (as they should be). As a result, when an elephant leader dies, the heard grieves in a way that is difficult to comprehend, even for humans.

After a fierce dispute with a rival from another herd, an elephant sadly passed away. The unfortunate event unfolded in Anuradhapura, not far from the Kalawewa reserve in Sri Lanka.

But what surprised everyone was the large number of elephants that went to pay their respects to the one that once was their leader.

On the shores of a lake in Sri Lanka, moving camera footage captures at least a dozen elephants crying for and encircling their king. But according to sources, up to 300 elephants arrived to pay their last respects to the formerly fierce herd leader. The mourning continues for several days.

Only a relatively small number of animal species are able to express their emotions. Elephants, dolphins, and chimpanzees are the only animals on the short list. When one of their kind is ill or in need, these creatures exhibit amazing compassion!
