Since he was a young puppy, Sandy has lived with his family, and he is very loyal to them. He constantly wants to be aware of everyone’s specific whereabouts so he can keep an eye on things and make sure the people he cares about are secure.
Sandy’s mother, Karen Manthey, told The Dodo that “he wants to be involved with everything we do.” Every time a member of our family leaves his care, he is sad. He will spend all of his time rushing back and forth on camping excursions if the family is split up (for example, half the family is at the lake a half mile away and the other is at the campsite), checking on each group to make sure everyone is okay.
Every day when the kids leave to walk to school, Sandy always tries to follow them. Sometimes he sneaks out the door and tries to start walking with them, but they’re always able to catch him and send him back before he makes it too far. He just really, really wants to go to school with them to keep an eye on them all day.
One day, Sandy was feeling particularly cunning and his children were preoccupied, so he managed to leave the house and go the entire distance to school without anybody knowing.
Everyone at Sandy’s kids’ school thought it was hilarious when he showed there with his kids, so they sent him directly to the principal’s office to wait for his mother to pick him up. His mother was astonished when the guilty dog showed up at home after they allowed one of his kids walk him back after they couldn’t reach her.
“I didn’t realize he was missing until my daughter showed up at home with Sandy,” Manthey said. “The school had tried calling me but my phone was turned off, my neighbor who was at the school snapped the infamous picture of him to ask if he was mine. Because we live so close, the school allowed my daughter to run him home. They were both thrilled with the adventure.”
Although Sandy had run away from home and entered the school without authorization, he didn’t appear to be feeling any shame. He was actually rather happy with himself.
He was overjoyed with the day’s activities when he arrived home, according to Manthey. If anything, I believe he’ll work even harder to steal away with the kids this time.
They visited the school to express their regret and ask Sandy if she could do anything to make up for the trouble she had unintentionally created. However, nobody at the school seemed disturbed about it at all. They were actually very entertained.
“They laughed pretty hard,” Manthey said. “I showed up over there to apologize and pay for the blinds but their cool school janitor had already replaced them. Instead they just asked me to email them the picture. The office ladies wanted it.”
Sandy is usually really good at following the rules. He just really wanted to make sure his kids were OK, because he loves them so much.
“He’s actually quite obedient,” Manthey said. “His heart just sometimes overtakes his obedience training.”
