“When I arrive home from work, he gets really excited and will sniff around the house until he finds me,” Tamale’s mother, Kayleigh Otstot, told The Dodo. “He performs the same thing with other visitors to the residence.” He’s a wonderful friend.”

The double merle Australian shepherd-mix, who was born blind and deaf, knows some places by heart, such as the neighborhood candy shop. This is where his favorite staff brings him pup cups, and a little cup of whipped cream. However, finding Otstot requires a bit more detective work using his nose.

Tamale, who has been under Otstot’s care since he was 4 months old, is just like any other seeing and hearing dog — he simply uses his other senses. He enjoys going on long walks, swimming, and playing with his younger dog brother, Kiwi.

“Having Tamale in my life has altered everything,” Otstot remarked. “I enjoy bringing him out of the home to be more confident and sociable, and he has made me so much more outgoing.””

“A lot of people believe having a special needs dog will slow you down or the dog down,” she explained. “Because of how well he moves around and how confident he is, some people would never suspect he is blind or deaf.
