It’s difficult to imagine footage more uninteresting than that captured by traffic cameras. All day long, they generally provide nothing but unending flows of vehicles and track. However, traffic cameras appear to have recently become a draw for wild birds.

We recently presented you to a curious turquoise-fronted parrot in Brazil that was mesmerized by a traffic camera. This time, though, we have something even more fantastic in store. In Montreal, Canada, a snowy owl made an extremely uncommon appearance on a highway camera. A Canadian official then posted the amazing footage online.

A majestic owl flies towards a traffic camera on Highway 40 and Sources Boulevard in this short video. The amazing moment was posted on Twitter by Canadian Transport Minister Robert Poti. “Magnificent snowy owl captured by road network security cameras on the A-40 in the west of MTL,” he wrote.

The McGill Bird Observatory recognized the owl in the clip as a juvenile female, and director Barbara Frei believes she was hunting for a place to perch.

“I believe they are drawn to the roadway because it is close to broad, green fields, which are ideal for hunting their preferred prey,” Barbara Frei told CBC News. “They want to obtain a good overview of the area, and high lamp poles or other objects that they can perch on while hunting are ideal.”

The snowy owl is a legally protected species in Canada, particularly in Quebec. They are regarded as a sign of knowledge and wisdom!
