A Walrus Slept On An Iceberg In The North Pole And Awoke In Ireland

A snooze gone awry resulted in a once-in-a-lifetime sighting.
Have you ever fallen asleep on a train or bus and missed your stop completely? You’re not on your own.
A walrus was observed on the western shore of Ireland in March 2021. This is a really unusual sight, but how did it end up there?

The walrus most likely fell asleep on an iceberg in the Arctic and floated all the way to Ireland while it was sleeping, according to experts.

Kevin Flannery, director of Oceanworld Aquarium in Dingle, Co. Kerry, told the Irish Independent, “I’d say what happened is he fell asleep on an iceberg and drifted off and then he had gone too far, out into the mid-Atlantic or someplace like that down off Greenland potentially.”

“That’s how it normally goes… they fall asleep on an iceberg and are swept away from the Arctic.”

Alan Houlihan, a nearby resident, and his 5-year-old daughter Muireann were the first to see the animal.

“At first, I assumed it was a seal, but then we noticed the tusks.” He sort of sprang up onto the ledges.”

“He was huge.” He was the size of a bull or a cow, or something close to that, and he’s enormous, gigantic,” Houlihan added.

“He was less than 50 meters away from us, directly beside us.” He went aside for a bit, then came back and returned to the rocks.”
Despite the fact that the animal is completely lovely, Flannery believes it is fatigued and hungry after such a long travel.

The public was warned to give the animal plenty of room if they came across it.

“I’m hoping he’ll be able to catch a few scallops around Valentia.” He does, however, wish to relax at this point. “He’s from the North Pole, maybe off the coast of Greenland,” Flanner explained.

“He may have gone island hopping from Iceland to Shetland, but that’s improbable.” I’d guess he arrived across the Atlantic. Thousands of kilometers separate us. If he regains his strength, he should be able to climb back up.”
